Ever wondered how somebody like Steve Jobs was able to be so ingeniously creative? Read on to start focusing your creative lens. Here, I’ll reveal the steps you can follow to exponentially increase your creativity and become a creative genius yourself!

This is how Steve Jobs described creativity:
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something.”
There’s a process you can use in order to “see something” as Steve Jobs put it. Part of this process is shedding light on all of the elements that make up the problem you’re trying to solve. After you make all of those elements visible, begin the process of connecting them in many unique and appealing ways.
Writer and actor John Cleese, a comedic creative genius from Monty Python, explains what you have do to boost your creativity:
“You have to create boundaries of space and then you have to create boundaries of time.”
This is called “restrictive creativity,” and it’s true. After you create boundaries and restrictions and impose a deadline, your creativity will soar.
A little pressure is a good thing!
Personal example: I was recently prompted to restart my computer. I didn’t want to close all of my internet browser tabs containing my reference materials until being sure I’d studied them all. Having this deadline, I quickly scanned them and ended up writing over 1000 words in less than 30 minutes. That’s just under my full, uninterrupted typing speed. The words just flowed and I felt very inspired. This practice really worked for me!
Improve creativity by defeating your creative block
I’ll start by covering ways to prevent creative block. This frustrating – even debilitating problem affects all of us at some point in our lives. And it can last a long, long time. Therefore, defeat it now. But hold on one minute. Never go into battle unarmed. And never enter a battle without a plan. So let’s look at some specific steps you can take to improve creativity by defeating your creative block. Don’t just wait for it to end.
Change your perspective
It all begins by changing your perspective. Look at what you’re trying to create from another angle. Ask yourself how someone else would approach the problem. Choose a famous person from history and think about how they would solve it. Take notes to document how you think they would do it, no matter how strange it may seem to you.
Most importantly, write down your ideas as you think of them. Then pick somebody else from history and repeat the process. Perform this exercise over and over until you get inspired by one or more of the approaches you’ve come up with.
Take breaks to stop creative block
When you’re struggling with creative block, step away for a while. Take a break. Briefly do something completely different. Once you return, your creative inspiration will be stronger than ever.
The incubation stage
Taking breaks is effective because of the incubation stage of human creativity. Incubation is defined as the process of unconscious recombination of thoughts that were stimulated through conscious effort at one point in time. This results in the formulation of novel ideas at a later point in time. Therefore, trust the science and take a break to eliminate creative block.
Interruptions improve creativity
There’s evidence to suggest that the interrupting people who’re performing creative tasks will cause them to be even more productive at generating creative ideas after they resume the task. The only stipulation is that they must be informed that they’ll get back to it when they return. Scheduling regular breaks during creative work time is one way to accomplish this effectively.
Your subconscious can work for you while you’re “offline”
Your subconscious is a strange and powerful thing. If it can work for you while you’re “offline” mentally, or while you’re working on something else, more power to it, right?
Other ways to improve your creativity
After defeating your creative block, incorporate some new methods to further improve creativity.
Set consistent goals
Improve creativity by sticking with the defined rules and goals you’ve set up ahead of time. When your end goals change, or when the guidelines are modified, creativity diminishes. Therefore, spend more time up front better defining the parameters and your end goals. You’ll maintain stronger creative inspiration while you work.
Diversity really helps to improve creativity
Another approach to improve your creativity is to surround yourself with diversity. Spend time with people who think differently than you do. It’s hard to be creative when the people around you think just like you do. This is like being in an echo-chamber where creativity dies.
Allow your mind to run unhindered
Avoid criticism and constant results evaluation during your creative process. This should only happen at the end. Creativity diminishes when new ideas are picked apart before they can be developed. So improve creativity by doing the opposite.
Enforce an environment of positive feedback. Positive reinforcement is very important during the creative process, especially when the ideas will impact the lives of others. Keep your creative people happy and they’ll produce much more innovation.
Creativity increases when you’re tired
Schedule times to be creative toward the end of the work day. Believe it or not, a tired brain is much more creative than one that’s rested.
Remember how distraction will enhance creativity? A tired brain is much more easily distracted. It struggles to filter out interruptions. It’s hard to focus on just one thing when you’re tired – your brain wanders off on tangents. It may be difficult to work when you’re tired, but the results are worth it!
Exercise works wonders!
Finally, prevent creative block by exercising. Exercise triggers divergent thinking – a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions. Also, exercise is a distraction. And now you know how distractions improve creativity if you intend on continuing after you return.
